Newsletter 3.6: NC State/Duke Results

I haven’t been here very long, but with each month that passes I am more and more impressed with the wrestling culture in California. The passion for the sport is intense. Because of this California has always produced great wrestlers. The history here is deep, even if the landscape has changed. Over the years, too many college programs in this state have been dropped, but the people, the values, and the love for the sport have endured.

Friday night at Maples is a chance to honor that history while also looking ahead. Coming off a home win over Duke and a home opener versus Iowa State with 2,200 tickets sold, #9 Stanford Wrestling welcomes #7 NC State Wolfpack at 7:00 pm for a night that reflects both where we’ve been and where we’re going. It’s about celebrating California college wrestling, creating energy in Maples, and continuing to build something that can last. In honor of the number of minutes wrestled in a college wrestling match here are the top 7 reasons to get to Maples this Friday:

Stanford vs NC State Wolfpack | 7:00 PM

  1. Because this is what momentum looks like.
A home win over Duke (35-10). Over 2,200 tickets sold for Iowa State. Can we top 2,200 while pulling off the upset?
  2. Because this is a ranked-on-ranked kind of night.
Team #7 vs #9 (Intermat tournament). How often are there two top 10 NCAA DI wrestling programs battling it out in California? Seven top 10 ranked wrestlers, 14 wrestlers ranked in the top 33. Five matches with ranked wrestlers facing each other.
  3. Because 149 pounds might steal the show.
No. 5 Koy Buesgens (NC State) vs No. 6 Aden Valencia (Stanford).
Both have big ranked wins. Both are good enough to win a national title. Get a preview of a potential NCAA finals match in Maples.
  4. Because 197 pounds could be a barn burner
No 21 Patrick Brophy vs No 19 Angelo Posada.  Both like to score a lot of points. In  his matches from last year Brophy tended to score in the double digits (10+). Posada has earned a pin or tech in 46% of his matches this season. Expect fireworks.
  5. Because every match in the ACC matters
Because it is a small, but mighty conference, there is not much room for error in our quest to win the ACC dual meet championship.  NC State has won (or shared) the ACC dual title in 7 of the last 8 years. A win here puts us in a great position to win our first ACC title.
  6. Because this night is bigger than one dual.
Friday is a California College Wrestling History Celebration, honoring the programs and people that built the sport here, including those lost along the way. Wrestling has deep roots in this state, and nights like this are how we protect its future.
  7. Because I hear there is a tailgate.
A pre-dual tailgate social outside Maples. Then ten matches under the lights at Maples Pavilion. That’s a pretty good way to spend a Friday night!
